Why is PSHE and Citizenship so Important?
Our aim is to develop mature, confident and thoughtful citizens. We have a thorough programme of Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) for all students as well as an exciting Citizenship programme of study.

PSHE is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work.

Citizenship education gives pupils the knowledge and skills to understand, challenge and engage with democratic society including politics, the media, civil society, the economy and the law.

Personal, Social and Health Education, alongside Citizenship Education enables students to:

  • gain knowledge and understanding of how to manage their lives now and in the future
  • discuss and explore issues and challenges that they face on a day to day basis in a safe and secure environment
  • to successfully deal with life changes and challenges such as bullying and discrimination
  • make informed choices to help them stay healthy and safe in today’s society
  • develop self-confidence and a sense of agency
  • have a voice in the life of their schools, their communities and society at large

Here are the some of the strategies that we have at Ormiston Rivers Academy to develop our students’ invaluable life skills:

  • We work with external agencies and act as a hub for programmes such as Duke of Edinburgh, Cadet Forces, Camps International and National Citizenship Service.
  • We arrange for external visitors and speakers including Holocaust survivor talks, PRIDE Youth Network speakers, Essex Police, Rotary club, theatre companies, amongst others.
  • Future destinations through bespoke careers programme through on site careers advisor. Regular trips to UCAS events and apprenticeships workshops so all students are ready for their next steps to success.
