Weekly Update - 12th November 2021

It has been another busy and purposeful week at the academy.

Students continue to enjoy a wide variety of lessons and learning opportunities, and to engage with these enthusiastically, as well as participating in a vast array of extra-curricular activities.  This week, these have included several sporting fixtures, a year 12 drama performance, lunchtime and after school clubs and a “raising aspirations” trip to Anglia Ruskin University.

At Ormiston Rivers, we strongly believe in the value and importance of extra-curricular activities and the additional skills and opportunities that they provide.  We encourage all students to participate in these, and try to offer a range of choices to ensure that there is something to engage all interests and age groups.

Similarly, we are keen to provide ongoing development opportunities for staff.  On Monday and Tuesday this week teaching staff worked closely with John Sullivan, a respected Teaching & Learning education consultant, who spent the two days visiting lessons across the academy and providing feedback and support.

Our Year 11 students have now completed their PPE exams.  They have worked extremely hard and should be very proud of their approach and attitude to these.  We wish them the best possible outcomes when they receive their results.

On Thursday 11th November, the academy held its annual Act of Remembrance, with students from local cadet and other community groups carrying out a parade, culminating with a two-minute silence and the laying of a wreath at the memorial plaque for John Thrumble, an ex-student of the academy who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2007.  I am pleased to say that all students conducted themselves with the dignity and respect that the occasion deserves.

A reminder that next Friday, 19th November, is a non-uniform day for Children in Need.  A letter in this respect has been sent to all parents and carers.  Donations can be made via Parent Pay.

13th November is “World Kindness Day”, so be kind to yourselves, and have an enjoyable and restful weekend.
