UN delegates for the day

Students become UN delegates for a day

Our students recently took part in Felsted School’s Model United Nations, giving them the opportunity to learn more about how the UN operates and test out their diplomacy skills.

Participating alongside fourteen schools from across the UK, Rivers’ students aged 11-18 came together with their peers to tackle the big issues of the day through debate, discussion and strategic thinking.

Representing different countries from across the globe, students were encouraged to build on international cooperation and friendships, voicing their opinions in order to bring about positive change.

The Rivers’ team was led by William in year 12, delegates included Lily, Milly and Jacob, also Year 12, Eva and Finley from Year 10, and Sebastian and Jaya from Year 8.

The theme of the conference this year was ‘Committing to Global Food Security’, and the Director of MUN at Felsted School reflected “never has attention to such a theme been so urgent as access to food is becoming increasingly precarious, with those already in need made even more vulnerable.”

Our students took an active part in the debates and contributed throughout, asking questions and forming alliances. In addition to the committees, which included Security Council, Human Rights, EcoSoc, Ecology and Environment and Health Committees, this year saw the addition of committees for UNICEF, The International Space Station Programme and an Historic Security Council.

Students also had the chance to hear from guest speaker, Rob Saggs from CHESS Homeless, who taught delegates more about the issue of homelessness in their local area and how they can support.
